Cooler Weather

The story for the weekend and coming week seems to be cooler temperatures, with more than one chance of snow. That said... nothing on the horizon looks all the impressive. Our first change will come tomorrow with slightly cooler temperatures than the balmy 60s we experienced today, and more clouds. All models are suggesting a chance of snow tomorrow night, but forecasts have dropped from 2-4 inches in Denver to more like a dusting or an inch. The system will exit Sunday, and temperatures will moderate a bit before another trough moves in midweek. This one could pack a little more of a punch, at least with temperatures, but will also give us another chance for light snow. Stay tuned!

"Slight Chance" of Snow

Things will remain fairly uneventful through the extended period. We have a slight chance of snow according to the National Weather Service tomorrow night and Monday, but the biggest story with this front will likely be the colder temperatures for Monday. Temperature are expected to then rebound quickly giving way to a mild week, and a very pleasant Thanksgiving holiday!

Storm Moves East

Light snow showers will continue this morning, but the main energy from our latest storm has already shifted well east of the area. Best chances for any additional accumulation will be in the western and southern suburbs, any accumulation should be light. We do remain under a winter storm warning, but I would expect those highlights to expire earlier than previously expected. Any lingering snow showers should be done by this evening as dry air pushes in to the area... Tomorrow highs should rebound into the 40s. The map below shows the storm moving east of the area and the high pressure moving in behind it [click to enlarge].
Here are some other pictures of conditions this morning. We got about six inches here in northwest Denver, be sure to check out the storm totals from around the region on the right!

*Winter Storm Warning*

Confidence is starting to grow surrounding our next storm due in this evening. The National Weather Service issued a *winter storm warning* in the last hour for most of northeast Colorado. There are still several scenarios of how exactly this storm will track across the state, and as usual, a slight deviation from the expected track could dramatically change how much snow we see in Denver. That said, forecasters are still calling for 6 - 12 inches before the storm slowly moves east Sunday evening... Let's see what happens!

*Quick Update*

Things remain on track for a snowy weekend. Snow showers tonight should diminish gradually from north to south with snow redeveloping tomorrow afternoon and continuing into Sunday. As for snowfall amounts... 1 - 5 tonight, most locations in Denver should end up with about 2 inches. Tomorrow night into Sunday the National Weather Service is still calling for another 6 - 12 inches of snow. Highlights remain in the *watch* category which means some uncertainty still remains. That said, would expect to at least see some snow redevelop for tomorrow night.

Winter Storm Watch

The first of two cold fronts has already moved through the area knocking temperatures back into the 40s today. The forecast for today calls for a 60% chance of rain and snow showers, but any precipitation that does fall should remain light. Little if any accumulation expected.
The real focus of this storm turns to Saturday evening through the day Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a *winter storm watch* for most of the urban corridor during this period. A winter storm watch means there is the potential for a "decent" winter storm to set up, possibly bringing the area anywhere from 6 - 12 inches of snow by the end of the day Sunday. I will say, however, that the models all week have been extremely inconsistent, and that some uncertainty remains around the exact track this storm will take. Thus it remains a watch until some consistency is seen. There is still plenty of time to tweak the forecast as needed over the next 24 hours.
Stay tuned!

A Return to Winter

Snow is back in the forecast after an extended period of dry weather and record highs. Today and tomorrow will remain mild with highs likely reaching 70 Thursday before the first of a couple cold fronts drops through the area Thursday night. At this point the details remain up in the air as far as I can tell. The cold front will likely bring a rain/snow mix to the metro area Thursday night, and a chance for all snow during the day Friday. Precipitation with this front looks fairly light overall. Temperatures will drop Friday into the 40s and are expected to stay there at least through Sunday.
Our second chance of snow comes on Sunday... The National Weather Service calls this front "more significant" than Thursday night's, but at this point are forecasting just a slight (10%) chance of snow on Sunday. That said, it bares watching... could be we are in for a late weekend snow.

Awesome Clouds

I stumbled upon some awesome cloud pictures and thought I would share. These were taken over Greenland sometime during December, 2008.

Winter is Over

Okay, not actually, but this week it sure does feel like it! Last week's snow is but a distant memory as temperatures have soared into the 60s and likely the mid 70s for the next several days.

For all those snow lovers out there... things are really not looking to promising for any snow in the extended forecast. Our best chance will come at the beginning of next week when temperatures are expected to dip back into the 40s for a few days, with only a slight chance of rain/snow showers at this time. November is our second snowiest month, but so far it has felt more like mid September than late winter.

...A few more slow days at your weather headquarters as we wait and watch for the next storm to crest the horizon.
